What are "Brownfields"?

EPA’s definition of “brownfield site” includes the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of property that may be complicated by the presence or potential (perceived) presence of contamination by hazardous substances, petroleum and other pollutants.

Since 2013, the Southest Volusia Corridor Improvement Coalition (SVCIC) team (i.e. Cities of New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill) has successfully implemented Brownfield assessment programs. In partnership with members of the communities, the program has provided funding and technical assistance to complete community redevelopment and economic development based projects.

The SVCIC is currently pursuing redevelopment opportunities that result in the following outcomes:

• Job generating business start-ups, recruitment, retention, and expansion
• Affordable/workforce housing development
• Healthier built environment
• Mixed use projects (commercial, residential, and industrial development with sustainable development integration)
• Green and open “space creation”
