Brownfields Program Awarded Coalition Grant Funds

In 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the City of Edgewater and its Coalition Members New Smyrna Beach, and Oak Hill, a Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant in the amount of $600,000. The grant provided a unique opportunity for the City of Edgewater and partnering communities to assist targeted areas within the corridor with Brownfields redevelopment by funding environmental site assessments (ESAs) on over an estimated 60 eligible Brownfields properties in the Coalition Communities. Additionally, comprehensive cleanup and reuse plans will be established on properties where contamination has been identified and redevelopment is imminent. The Coalition aimed to achieve the following goals and outcomes through successful implementation of this grant:

  1. Provide for jobs within the community,
  2. Provide for access to health care within the community,
  3. Provide for access to fresh foods within the community,
  4. Facilitate sustainable redevelopment,
  5. Mitigate known environmental contamination,
  6. Reduce amount of blighted and vacant properties,
  7. Provide for green space areas and other  uses of properties underutilized,
    1. Integrate new and planned Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRA) with a common goal that provides for public input on the revitalization of US 1 and this area,
    2. Utilize the opportunities that the Enterprise Zone designation brings to the area to encourage interest in revitalization.

The Coalition Grant period runs from October 1, 2021, through September 30, 2024.
