Meters and Reading the Meter

Why is the City replacing my meter?

The City of Edgewater is in the process of replacing all water meters throughout the city.  The meters currently in use are reaching the end of their useful life and are due to be replaced.

How do we know the meter did not speed up?

Because of its mechanical design, the meter cannot speed up. The meter is a positive displacement meter. This means that the meter will only register if water passes through it. A set of magnets transmits the motion of an internal disc, causing the numbers to turn only when water is passing through the meter. As a meter ages, it tends to slow down (measuring less water than actually passes through it) or stops altogether. If this happens, the city removes and replaces the meter.

Who owns the water meter?

The City of Edgewater owns the meter and the backflow prevention assembly as well as the pipes connecting them to our system. The property owner owns from the outside of the backflow prevention assembly into the building or home and is responsible for repair and maintenance.
