Surrender Information

We are here to serve the City of Edgewater. Surrenders from any other city or the unincorporated county areas will incur a cost.

Pet owners surrender their pets to the Edgewater Animal Shelter for many reasons. Landlords may change, owners may move, allergies may develop, or there may be on going behavioral challenges with the animal. We understand these life changes and are here to assist the community.

Animal Control FAQs

Animal Control is responsible for enforcement of City Ordinances and Florida State Statutes relating to domesticated animals.

The City of Edgewater has one full time Animal Control Officer assigned to domesticated animal services.

The following type incidents may be reported by calling the Volusia County Dispatch Center (386)424-2000 (Option 4). The Dispatch center will dispatch an Animal Control Officer or a Law Enforcement Officer if the incident occurs after hours.

Spay and Neuter Information

The Animal Control Division’s mission is to control the feral cat overpopulation in the City of Edgewater through the humane, non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return, or TNR for short. TNR is providing an effective way of managing feral cat colonies and reducing their numbers over time. Concerned Citizens for Animal Welfare group is taking a lead in this mission.

Role of City of Edgewater Animal Control Officer(s)

The City of Edgewater employs one animal control officer who is trained to handle situations with domesticated pets only. Wildlife problems are addressed under the jurisdiction of Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.   Routine patrols are conducted throughout the City to ensure all pets are tagged and on leashes when outside the home. Barking dog complaints are investigated by the Animal Control Officer and the Edgewater Police Department.

Fire Prevention

Edgewater Fire Rescue crews and department staff endeavor to inspect each commercial business in the City annually in an effort to reduce fire and life safety issues in the community. All new businesses in the City are inspected for building, fire and life safety code compliance prior to opening. All new commercial construction receives a review of the building plans to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes. Any new subdivision plans are reviewed to ensure all areas are accessible by emergency vehicles and to make sure there are adequate fire hydrants.

When To Call 911

An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from the police or fire department. Keep in mind that most all fire departments also provide emergency medical services. Edgewater Fire Rescue provides advanced life support (paramedic) services as well as transport to the hospital via one of our two ambulances.

Life Safety Division

The Life Safety Division is responsible for plans review, fire prevention enforcement, fire safety inspections, and fire investigations. The Fire Marshal is state certified firefighter, state certified fire safety inspector and state certified law enforcement officer.

The Fire Marshal is designated by the Fire Chief as the authority having jurisdiction and is empowered by state statute and City of Edgewater Code of Ordinance. The Fire Marshal is a sworn law enforcement officer with the Edgewater Police Department.
